A key aspect of the FFA National Curriculum is the implementation of the Skill Acquisition Program (SAP) to perfect and accelerate the skill development of identified players at the critical ages of 9 to 13. Murray United FC is an approved licensee to deliver the SAP program to ensure that players are equipped to transition into the NPL pathway.
SAP exists because young players want to follow their dream of becoming a better footballer.
Football skills are vital to a player’s development at all levels, but essentially at the elite level where success is determined by the ability to perform a range of core skills effectively under match conditions.
Of course, not all players will become elite players, but all will benefit from being part of the SAP program in a number of ways. They will be exposed to a total football education process and experience, which will benefit each individual player and help prepare them for whatever their football future may bring.
Players will be given the opportunity to improve their ability within the four core skills while learning the value of a disciplined approach, punctuality and the need to practice effectively and regularly if they aspire to be a better player.
Players will also learn to appreciate the importance of setting high standards and the value of hard work and effort all in an environment that is enjoyable and fun.
To ensure players have the necessary core skills so that they have an improved opportunity to play at a higher level including NPL.
The Skill Acquisition Program focuses on the development of four core (functional game) skills:
> STRIKING THE BALL
> FIRST TOUCH
> 1 v 1
> RUNNING WITH THE BALL
Positioning and communication amongst other key principles of the game underpin every session in connection with the core skills shown above.
The most critical aspect of the SAP is the training environment. Training will take place twice a week and takes priority over participating player’s respective club training. At end of each training cycle (typically 6-8 weeks) a Gala Day is generally conducted to allow players the opportunity to apply their developing core skills in non-competitive games with other SAP licensed clubs.
The SAP is open to all players who display a willingness to improve. SAP was developed to provide the best learning environment to prepare players for the technical and tactical challenges of the NPL. SAP is therefore open to all players within the eligible age range each year.
